These pieces are created by blowing the hot glass bubble into a hollow hardwood log, which burns the imprint of woodgrain on to the surface of the glass. The piece is then further worked and stretched. All pre-made glass elements and glass colour are picked up and melted into the surface layers of the growing bubble prior to this procedure. These colours represent the wide variety of beautiful Australian hardwood timbers.

Artist's Statement

"Having no formal training in glass making, I have had to rely on a learn as one goes' approach.

The inspiration for my work comes from a variety of sources. The unique qualities of glass itself, especially in it's molten state. The almost unlimited possibilities to play with colour, form and texture provide a great avenue for creative expression. However, much inspiration is drawn from the rich diversity of Australia's natural environments, the reef, rain forest and the 'Outback'. From an early age, I have had a great interest in anthropology, ancient cultures, the development of writing, philosophy and art across all continents.

My modis operandi is probably not unlike that of a painter. In the Landscape or environmental themes, the colours and designs are built up on different layers against a background colour. This produces a layered, three dimensional effect. On other pieces, I have combined surface colouring techniques, cane drawing and pre fusedimagery to create a collaged appearance.

I enjoy the design stage immensely, but there is also a need to be intimately involved in the making process. The hands on approach is necessary to satisfy that desire within to create."
